How to Choose a Hoodie for the Weather

Weight, fabric, layers, and fit: a guide for choosing the right hoodie for cold, hot, light rain, or changing weather.

Choosing a hoodie according to the weather starts by understanding that not all coats are alike. Some are light for layering; others have more bulk and work better on chilly mornings or windy nights.

For warm weather with a breeze, look for a lightweight and sweat-wicking hoodie. It should feel comfortable over a shirt and not generate too much heat while walking. Soft fabrics, relaxed cuts, and light-colored or medium tones are suitable in this case.

For moderate cold, pick a hoodie with more weight or plush inner lining. This type of fabric retains more heat and feels warmer. It's useful for trips, offices with air conditioning, early mornings, or mountain afternoons.

For changing weather, the hoodie should work as an intermediate layer. The most practical formula is base shirt, hoodie, and light jacket if there's a chance of rain or wind. This way you can add or remove layers without being too loaded.

Fit also matters. If you want to wear it under a jacket, avoid excessive bulk. If it will be your main piece, a relaxed silhouette might look better and allow more movement.

Check cuffs, hood, and pockets. Firm cuffs help retain heat, a comfortable hood protects against light wind, and a front pocket can be useful for short trips.

Before buying, ask yourself: Will I use it in my most frequent weather? Can it fit under another layer? Does it cover without being obstructive? Does it combine with my pants and sneakers? A good hoodie shouldn't serve only for the ideal temperature; it should adapt to various moments of the day.
