What to Bring for a One-Day Hike

Clear checklist for a one-day hike: clothing, layers, hydration, sunscreen, snacks, and useful accessories.

For a one-day hike, it's most important to carry what you need without overloading yourself. Clothing and accessories should help you move comfortably, protect you from the weather, and solve small unexpected issues.

Start with a breathable shirt. Avoid fabrics that retain too much moisture if you're going to sweat. Over it, wear a light layer: a thin hoodie, lightweight jacket, or windbreaker depending on the temperature.

If the route has changes in weather, add an impermeable or light rain-resistant jacket. In the mountains, the weather can change in minutes even if the day starts sunny.

For the lower half, use comfortable pants, technical leggings, or pants with good mobility. The choice depends on the terrain, temperature, and your tolerance to cold. Avoid breaking in footwear; sneakers or boots should be tried out.

In your backpack, carry water, snacks, sunscreen, ID, money, external battery, wipes or paper, trash bag, and a small first aid kit. A scarf, hat, or glasses can protect you from the sun, wind, and dust.

The clothing should work in layers: a base layer for sweating, an outer jacket, and exterior protection if there's wind or rain. This way, you can adjust your temperature without stopping the entire hike.

Before going out, check the distance, elevation, weather, and return time. Not all one-day hikes require the same equipment. A short urban route doesn't need the same kit as a mountain hike.

The best preparation is the one that lets you enjoy the path without constantly thinking about what you forgot.
